It is so nice to have the world coming back to normal! Some RV-10 friends Brian and Brandi and their daughter Lucy flew to meet up at our hangar (KORL) before we departed for Lakeland (KLAL) to attend Sun N Fun 2021. If you want to camp near someone it’s best to fly in with them so you are likely to park near each other. Much to my surprise we had to do a few circuits around Lake Parker on the way in. After a long taxi we made our way to the western side of Homebuilt Camping (HBC) near Sea Plane Camping, almost the exact spot we camped in 2019.
The show this year was interesting. I would guess that about 30-40% of the indoor exhibitor space was empty. The outdoor exhibitor space was not packed but had a fair representation of previous years. The airshow was enjoyable as usual and the night airshow had a drone routine to add a bit of something different. It was really nice for our kids to get to be kids again and spend time running around airplanes with Lucy.
This year Karrie’s birthday fell during Sun N Fun. As she is far smarter than I am it is very hard for me to surprise her. I enlisted Brandi’s help and asked her if she could bring some party supplies I would order to their house with them. She insisted on baking a cake instead! Woo-Hoo! Karrie was shocked when they pulled that cake out of their airplane. My dad, Cris, and younger sister made a guest appearance for the Wednesday night airshow and birthday party. They drove down and loaded a wagon to trek across the show grounds to HBC. It was an excellent evening.
Friday rolled around and we loaded up the tent and waited for some VFR weather to depart.
