Brief Description:
After years of wearing David Clark passive headsets, I bought, owned, and tried every pair of Lightspeeds they produced. Having such amazing customer service it was hard to try another brand but in my search for the perfect headset I joined the dark-side and bought a pair of A20s. I learned that the Bose product simply fit my head better. While I appreciated the customer service of Lightspeed, the A20s fit better. After flying around 500 hours in the RV-10 in less than (6) months wearing the A20s I had a fair amount of recent experience with them comparing them to the Zulu 3s that I also own.
When the A30s came out I was excited to give them a try as they came something like a decade after the A20s came to the market. I was thinking that they would be a direct replacement for the A20s and make them obsolete. I was wrong. While the A30s have less clamping force and work great in the jet at work, they have such little clamping force that if you move your head fast enough (by choice or by turbulence) they will move! While my chief complaint about all previous headsets is clamping force I never thought it would be possible to not have enough! While the A30s are a superior headset in almost every way, the fact that they have such little clamping force is a hinderance to my single engine piston operations. For this application I prefer the A20s, while at work in the jet, I prefer the A30s.
